Translation and Interpreting Institute

Hamad bin Khalifa University’s Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII) was established with a mission to build translation capacity in Qatar and the region. It is a physical and virtual space that delivers sophisticated translator and interpreter education, high-level training in a range of languages, and quality translation and interpreting services of the highest international standards. TII also provides a platform for conducting cutting-edge research in the field, and is committed to fostering an environment that is supportive of cultural exchange and scholarly excellence. Led by a distinguished international team of faculty and staff; TII consists of a Postgraduate Studies and Research Department, a Language Center, and a Professional Services Center.

Postgraduate and Research Department

TII’s Postgraduate and Research Department spearheads an ambitious strategy for postgraduate education in the region, delivering a unique set of graduate programs to train leading professionals working between Arabic and a range of languages in all areas of translation and interpreting. TII currently offers two unique programs:

• MA in Translation Studies (MATS)
The MATS is a two-year program designed to train highly skilled translators in the areas of business and commerce, science and technology, literary translation, and translation of media texts, as well as translation for international organizations. In May of 2014, TII has received the Faculty of Translation and Interpreting (FTI) Quality Label from the University of Geneva. TII is now recognized as offering both the first graduate degree in translation in the State of Qatar as well as the first externally validated graduate degree at HBKU.

• MA in Audiovisual Translation (MAAT)
Launched in September 2014, the MA in Audiovisual Translation (MAAT) is a twoyear program designed to train specialists in the mediation of audiovisual texts, both for foreign-language viewers and sensory impaired audiences. The program equips students with practical and technological skills required for a career in subtitling, dubbing, voice-over, subtitling for the hard of hearing and audio description.

Language Center:
A core component of TII, the Language Center supports its academic mission by offering students expert language training in Arabic, French, Spanish, English and Mandarin Chinese to enable them to fully utilize these languages in their professional activities. Furthermore, the Language Center serves the language-training needs of the wider community in Doha by providing multilevel classes in these languages.

The Professional Services Center (PSC)
TII PSC has a dedicated team of highly trained translators and interpreters committed to carrying forward the great tradition of translation in the Arab world by providing high quality translation services using the latest technology and tools available. TII PSC also offers workshops to professionals and internships to TII students, to help enhance their professional development.
