The Gulf English Nursery

Al Gharaffa

DESCRIPTION

The Gulf English School opened in 1993 to meet the need for an educational facility which would provide a broad and balanced curriculum based on the English National Curriculum and also offer an Arabic Language and Islamic Studies programme as authorized by the Supreme Education Council. The school is housed in modern purpose built facilities of a coeducational programme up until Year Five and a segregated programme from Year Six onwards.

From a small beginning in two villas, the school has rapidly developed and now occupies two large modern purpose built premises with all facilities available to educate students to a high standard.

The Gulf English School only employs fully qualified teachers of the highest calibre from all over the world. All teachers are fluent and competent English speakers who are experts in their particular field of knowledge and skills.

Teachers bring a wide breadth of experience and pedagogical practice and many hold masters degrees or equivalent.

Our Mission
Our school seeks to provide a learning environment which is caring, motivating and supportive allowing all cultures within the GES community to achieve their personal best and to become responsible global citizens

CURRICULUM
GES broadly follows the National Curriculum of England and Wales and the International Baccalaureate Diploma, with all teaching carried out in English (except Arabic, Quran, French and Spanish lessons).
In the Infant school children start their learning journey in the Early Years department. In Pre-school and Reception years we follow the Early Years Foundation stage curriculum (EYFS) which precedes the National Curriculum of England and Wales which starts in Key Stage 1 (Year 1 and 2).

This journey of learning continues as the children move into Key Stage 2 (Years 3, 4, 5 and 6). Here our children learn to become more independent; applying their skills and knowledge in an increasing range of contexts. The National Curriculum standards continue to be our guide and a basis for our assessments.

In Years 7-9 the curriculum follows the standards and learning outcomes as set out by the British Government. In Years 10 and 11 students opt to continue studying some subjects at (I)GCSE level. These are externally set syllabi with formal examinations at the end of Year 11. All students in Year 10 and 11 will study English, Mathematics and at least one Science subject. Post 16 there are three options for our students: a two year IB diploma course which is recognized by Universities all over the world and students opting to take this course are aiming to go straight to university degree programmes and it is very well regarded internationally. There is also a one year AS level course where students take English and Mathematics and then choose three other subjects. These again are formally examined at the end of the year. Most students opting for this course will be aiming to go to foundation courses at University. We also offer BTEC as an alternative option for students combined with some AS-level subjects or IGCSE subjects.

Admission

New applicants should submit their previous school records and a completed reference form filled by the previous school prior to entrance testing.

Admissions testing will be done on all students who apply to the school except International Baccalaureate and AS-level students provided that they have 5 or more A-C IGCSEs or GCSE. The admissions test includes a reading and math assessment as well as a writing sample. Testing will take place before any admission decision is made.

Acceptance decisions could include full acceptance, conditional acceptance, or denial. Parents will be notified of the decision. Once a year group closes, a waiting pool will be established. Parents and students will be notified should an opening become available. GES does not accept any applications or testing if places are unavailable.

GES does not accept students with physical, emotional, or learning needs that cannot be appropriately remediated in the school's programme. After initial acceptance of a student, the school reserves the right to deny re-enrolment if the student's needs go beyond the scope of available services.
