DESCRIPTION

For sixteen years, Al Khor International School (AKIS) has been delivering education as a non-denominational and co-educational establishment, offering the National Curriculum of England and CBSE Curriculum of India.

AKIS caters to over 4,000 culturally and ethnically diverse students from over 53 different nationalities.  Aged between four and eighteen, students are taught from Nursery to Grade 13 across five buildings, led by a dedicated and skilled team of almost 600 staff within academic and support.

Owned by RasGas and Qatargas – two of the largest natural gas-producing companies in the world, AKIS caters primarily to the children of their employees.  It is licensed by the Supreme Education Council (SEC), and fully complies with the resolutions of the SEC and the laws of the State of Qatar.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to our school. Here at AKIS, we aim to provide a well-rounded education in a supportive yet disciplined environment that allows students to discover their full potential at every age. We have high expectations of our pupils, who have the backing of a committed staff and purposeful community that holds intellectual inquisitiveness as the highest value and goes out of its way to make learning enjoyable.

You will quickly come to realise that the school operates like a large family – an extension of the larger Al Khor community of RasGas and Qatargas employees. Driven forward by the ideals enshrined in our corporate values, we aim to deliver only the very highest standards of education through personalised attention, encouragement and growth opportunities.

As an internationally recognised school with a sound reputation and abundant resources, we pride ourselves on the educational experiences we are able to offer our children and the excellent academic standards achieved throughout the school. We are also proud of the wide range of extracurricular opportunities we are able to offer that allow students to discover new interests and hone new skills.

In order to improve our already outstanding track record, the school has recently embarked on a radical restructuring exercise prompted by the return to direct management control by RasGas. This has already led to significant achievements and the setting of clear and defined objectives and higher goals for the institution.

I hope you enjoy browsing the contents of this website as you consider sending your daughter or son to Al Khor International School. If you have any questions, you are welcome to call or write us. We would also encourage you to make an appointment to come see the vibrant atmosphere of the school for yourself.

In line with the school’s vision to become one of the leading schools in the Middle East and play a critical role in RasGas and QatarGas’ drive to attract and retain quality staff, a new unit called Central Operations and Services (COS) has been established since June 2011 aiming to provide all the services more efficiently and effectively to our stakeholders.

COS mainly is responsible all the non-academic related issues in the  school and consists of the Estate and Facilities Section, Finance Section, Housing and Transportation Section, Human Resources Section, General Admin Section and Libraries Section, ICT Section and Procurement Section. Each section is leading by its own responsible expert.

Curriculum

AKIS Primary School provides a vibrant and stimulating educational environment for around 1500 children from Foundation Stage up to Year 6. Our curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum for core subjects and the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) for theme and humanities.

Our internationally diverse range of pupils is provided with a high-quality education, delivered by experienced and dedicated teachers from around the world.

As well as a strong focus on the core areas of English literacy (reading, writing and speaking) and numeracy, science and ICT, we also provide specialist lessons in physical education (PE), music, languages and Islamic studies.

Our emphasis is on developing the whole child. This is reflected in the importance placed on the vital partnership between home and school, and it is supported by our successful Virtues programme and house system. Both place a priority on developing well-rounded, globally-minded learners who are able to communicate and socialise effectively.

A combination of world class provision of resources across the primary school, low pupil to teacher ratios and a highly dedicated and child-focused teaching and management staff, ensures our primary school is a truly great place for children to learn and grow, academically and socially.

Senior school accounts for years 7 to 13 across three key stages. By the time the students graduate from senior school, they leave as confident, caring and responsible global citizens with the academic and social skills to participate successfully in higher education and the workplace and to lead productive and fulfilling lives.

In Key Stage 3 (years 7 to 9 for 11 to 14 year olds), we liaise closely with colleagues in Key Stage 2 and the Student Affairs team to provide a smooth transition from the Primary to Secondary phases in terms of the students’ emotional and academic development.

As part of a broad and balanced curriculum the students study the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, ICT, Geography, History, a Language (Arabic, French or Bahasa), Design & Technology, Art & Design, Performing Arts, Physical Education and Islamic Studies or PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education).

An enquiring and investigative approach to learning helps to develop the students’ personal learning and thinking skills. In English, Mathematics and Science the students are placed in sets according to ability, thus ensuring that each individual is both suitably challenged and appropriately supported. Assessment data, including from National Curriculum tests, are used to closely monitor learning progression.

In Key Stage 4 (years 10 and 11 for 14 to 16 year olds) students take the two-year GCSE (General Certificate in Secondary Education) courses. The syllabi and the final examinations, which the students usually sit at the end of Year 11, are set by U.K. examination boards.

All students follow a core programme of English Language & Literature, Mathematics, Science, P.E., and Islamic Studies or Global Citizenship. In addition, each student must choose four optional subjects from the following list: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, ICT, Computing, Product Design, Engineering, Business Studies, Economics, French, Arabic as a 1st language, Arabic as a foreign language, Classical Arabic, Bahasa, Psychology, Media Studies, Art & Design, Film & Photography, Drama, Music and  Physical Education.

Accelerated routes in Maths and Science provide individual pathways for high ability students whilst a foundation programme is available to those requiring greater support.

In Key Stage 5 (years 12 and 13 for 16 to 18 year olds), most students specialize in three or four advanced level courses. They choose from a broad range of subjects and receive guidance from the Careers Team to help select subjects relevant to their higher education and career plans. A modern sixth form centre consisting of a common room and study room with networked computers provides a very positive learning environment.

In addition to advanced level courses we offer a number of transitional courses, which are designed to help students gain entry into advanced level courses or provide the functional skills necessary to gain entry into further education colleges.

In this stage, the encouragement of independent learning skills and the provision of numerous self-development and leadership opportunities are designed to prepare students for entry to reputable universities around the world and for the pursuit of a wide a range of successful careers.

Admissions

The school’s admissions policy is designed to meet RasGas/QatarGas company missions to deliver an outstanding standard of international education to employees’ children. In summary, the following considerations for entry apply:
RasGas and QatarGas Employees’ children
This is the fundamental reason the school was founded, and these children continue to be the vast majority of those on roll. Entry is automatic on application, provided the child does not fall within categories as specified by the Companies’ PPMs as needing special education.
Non-Company children
The school does make a certain number of places available to non-Company children, subject to place availability, but such cases must meet strict criteria and be approved by the Education Manager and RasGas Senior Management. Such exceptions will normally only be considered for entry into the Foundation Stage, and at the start of an Academic Year.
