A transformative educational experience

Carnegie Mellon University set its own course with programs that inspire creativity and collaboration. A private, top-ranked and global university, Carnegie Mellon looks beyond the traditional borders of the university campus to have a transformative impact locally, nationally, and globally. In 2004, CMU began a partnership with Qatar Foundation to bring this unique educational experience to the Middle East.

For 20 years, Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar has provided a world-class education in the heart of Education City. More than 1300 graduates have completed their education at CMU-Q, and more than 450 students are currently pursuing studies in biological sciences, business administration, computer science and information systems.

As the CMU-Q alumni network grows, so does the impact that we have on Qatar and the world. Our graduates work at top organizations and innovative startups. They influence government policy, analyze big data, bring culture and the arts to the community, and inspire young people to learn and innovate. They are researchers, creators, entrepreneurs, analysts and educators, and they are working to improve the world around them.

Qatar Foundation

Qatar Foundation (QF) is a not-for-profit organization where centers and programs focused on education, research and innovation, and community development intertwine for the benefit of Qatar, and the world.

QF’s unique ecosystem, which is supported by partnerships with leading international institutions, addresses Qatar’s most pressing challenges, creates local, regional, and global impact, and empowers people to shape both the present and the future.

Education City

Education City, Qatar Foundation’s flagship initiative, is a campus that spans more than 12 square kilometers and hosts branch campuses of some of the world’s leading educational institutes, a homegrown university, and other research, scholastic, and community centers.

Together, these institutes make Education City a unique model of academic and research excellence, pioneering a new approach to multidisciplinary, global education and enabling breakthroughs that benefit Qatar and the rest of the world.

History and Traditions

After emigrating from Scotland in 1848, Andrew Carnegie worked in a textile mill. By attending night school and borrowing books, he transformed himself into a successful entrepreneur and industrialist, founding what became the world’s largest steel producing company.

Andrew Carnegie believed strongly that he should use his fortune to make the world a better place. In 1900, he donated $1 million to create Carnegie Tech, a school where men and women could learn and enhance their careers, lives and communities.

As a young man, Andrew Mellon joined the family banking business where he soon proved to be an extraordinary judge of entrepreneurial talent. Andrew Mellon understood that by putting money into research, he could find new, and profitable, technologies. In 1913, he created an independent, industrial research center called the Mellon Institute.

Long after the deaths of Andrew Carnegie and Andrew Mellon, these educational institutions continued to grow and flourish, and in 1967, they joined forces to form Carnegie Mellon University. By bringing together the best of both of these institutions, Carnegie Mellon was transformed into a worldwide influence.
